With the ever escalating competition amongst airlines for international destinations around the globe, the need for transport aircraft adapting to extreme weather conditions is at hand. Amongst the numerous adverse weather conditions faced by pilots is icing, which is often underestimated. Various systems are now being developed and employed in airplane components so as to ensure their adaptability to such weather phenomenon.

Modern aircraft are equipped with systems providing considerable resistance to icing conditions. However, all aircraft do have a predictable limit against icing. It must be noted that the best form of prevention against icing is to avoid icing conditions in the first place, since no such system has been developed yet that guarantees a 100% prevention against, or removal of ice deposits on the aircraft.

Defining Anti-icing and De-icing Systems

Preventive systems against icing are referred to as anti-icing systems. Such methods do not affect immediately but have a rather gradual and almost trivial effect on the deposited ice. These systems are deployed before the aircraft is expected to encounter icing conditions.
