There are rods and reels for every type of fishing; let's sort out what you need.

Leaving fly fishing, which is really a separate endeavor, aside, all fishermen use one of two kinds of reel: revolving spool (usually called "conventional"); or fixed spool (commonly known as "spinning"). The conventional reel was invented first (hence the name), and here's the most important thing you need to know about a conventional reel: if you don't operate it properly, you'll get the line tangled.

This is why the spinning reel was invented. Don't get me wrong; nothing is foolproof in fishing, but for a beginner, it's easier to fish with spinning tackle.

How Spinning and Conventional Reels Work

On a conventional reel, the spool turns (revolving spool) as you crank the handle, and the line is wound on; on a spinning reel, the spool is stationary (fixed spool), and turning the handle moves a contraption called a bail, which winds the line around the spool.
