Conversion of passenger and commercial vehicles to natural gas comes in the form of compressed natural gas. Compressed natural gas vehicle conversions are becoming increasingly popular as the demand for alternative fuel sources and independence from foreign oil are sought. In addition, compressed natural gas holds the advantage over gasoline and diesel fueled vehicles in that it’s the cleanest burning fuel available in abundance right here at home.

Types of Compressed Natural Gas Fuel Systems

Compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion kits for passenger vehicles are made available in two varieties. A dedicated conversion kit transforms a vehicle to operate exclusively on CNG. Dedicated CNG kits go through a rigorous approval process by both the E.P.A. as well as the California Air Resource Board for vehicles of specific makes and year models.

Bi-fuel kits are also sold and installed in a variety of vehicle types including trucks, buses, vans, and passenger cars. Bi-fuel systems allow for gasoline or diesel burning vehicle to operate on either CNG or the original fuel source. Although these systems provide flexibility in selection of the fuel source to be used, they are not as clean burning as a dedicated compressed natural gas vehicle.
